A good rule of thumb is to allow space for two fingers between the flank cinch and the horse at the apex of the belly. The cinch should never hang loose or drop below the horse’s belly, as a loose flank cinch can pose a safety risk for both horse and rider.
For proper positioning and safety, always use the connecting strap between the front and rear cinches. This keeps the flank cinch correctly aligned and prevents it from sliding back and becoming a potential “bucking strap.”
